The Allure of Unfreedom

Why Freedom Isn’tAlways the Answer (And What to Do About It)

Freedom is supposed to be liberating. Yet Erich Fromm argues it often feels like a prison. Why? Because true freedom demands responsibility, chaos, and the weight of choice—none of which come without anxiety. Here’s how to confront this paradox.

Freedom starts as a child’s privilege: unburdened by decisions, swimming in others’ plans. But as adulthood demands we navigate careers, relationships, and survival, that safety erodes. Fromm posits we then seek escape—not through less freedom, but through controlling it. Authoritarianism traps us in others’ rules, destructiveness lashes out at the world to regain order, and conformity ditches individuality to blend into the crowd. All three distract from the terror of making our own path.

The trick is to embrace freedom’s discomfort. Instead of fleeing, we must cultivate courage to act intentionally. Fromm’s wisdom isn’t to reject structure—it’s to build it ourselves. Authority should empower, not dominate; destruction should foster change, not chaos; conformity can coexist with authenticity.

Society thrives when we accept freedom as a tool, not a trap. The goal isn’t perpetual escape but mindful choice: to shape our lives, not hide from them.

Reflect: Are you living freely or escaping it? The answer might surprise you.
