Well-intentioned plans can have unintended consequences, ultimately harming those they’re meant to help. By imposing mandatory gratuities, letting mediocre employees “skate,” and saying “yes” to our kids without Boundaries, we’re making them dependent on our good graces rather than teaching them personal responsibility. Guaranteed rewards, such as automatic bonuses and unearned promotions, can lead to complacency and a lack of motivation. Similarly, “safe spaces” that protect students from dissenting viewpoints can limit their ability to think critically and make informed decisions.

When we reward people for nothing, we can’t expect them to strive for excellence. Unqualified quotas, nonsensical no-bids, and questionable quid pro quos can all lead to a lack of accountability and a sense of entitlement. Moreover, empty entitlements, such as providing government services without encouraging self-sufficiency, can create dependency and helplessness. We must recognize that compassion shouldn’t be measured by the size of a handout, but by our ability to provide opportunities that reduce dependency and enable people to become self-sufficient.

By encouraging personal responsibility and accountability, we can help individuals develop the confidence, dignity, and motivation needed to succeed. It’s time to reevaluate our approach and ask ourselves: are we truly helping, or are we inadvertently hurting those we’re trying to support? By promoting a culture of meritocracy, hard work, and self-reliance, we can empower individuals to reach their full potential and create a more resilient, motivated, and successful community.
