Google Unveils Enhanced Nest Smart Home Devices with Advanced AI Capabilities
Google recently introduced a revamped lineup of Nest smart home security devices, including a new Nest Cam Outdoor, Nest Cam Indoor, and Nest Doorbell, each designed to integrate seamlessly with the company’s AI assistant, Gemini. These devices aim to elevate smart home security and convenience with cutting-edge features and improved functionality.
The new Nest cameras and doorbell boast 2K HDR video, offering sharper and more detailed imagery compared to previous models. This upgrade ensures that users can zoom in with greater clarity, making it easier to capture essential details like license plates or package deliveries. Additionally, the devices feature a wider and taller field of view, allowing users to see more of their surroundings. For instance, the Nest Doorbell now offers a 166-degree diagonal view and a 1:1 aspect ratio, providing a more comprehensive and square image that captures both the head and feet of someone at the door, as well as packages on the ground.
Low-light performance has also been significantly enhanced. The cameras now offer 120% more light sensitivity, enabling them to stay in full-color mode longer during dawn and dusk. For complete darkness, the devices still rely on infrared vision, which uses heat signatures to maintain visibility.
One of the standout features of the new Nest devices is their integration with Google’s Gemini AI. Gemini enhances the smart home experience by making notifications more intelligent and context-rich. Instead of generic alerts like “motion detected,” users receive detailed updates, such as “dog jumps out of playpen,” accompanied by a zoomed-in video preview. This semantic scene understanding, made possible by Gemini’s multi-modal capabilities, transforms the way users interact with their security devices, turning simple alerts into meaningful insights.
Gemini also powers the Home Brief feature, which provides a quick summary of the past 24 hours’ activity. This allows users to catch up on missed events, such as package deliveries, visitors, or pets getting into mischief. The feature can even be tailored to focus on specific areas of interest, like the kids or pets, offering a more personalized experience.
To further enhance convenience, Gemini can assist with complex tasks, such as setting up home automations or understanding energy use. For example, users can ask Gemini to help them feel safer at home, and the AI can suggest routines that involve closing blinds and locking doors or simulating presence by automatically turning lights on and off while they’re away.
In terms of accessibility, Google has expanded its event history from three to six hours on the free tier, with each event accompanied by a 10-second video. Users who need more extensive history can upgrade to 10 days, 60 days, or other plans. The Nest devices are also more sustainable, featuring plastic-free packaging and new, stylish color options. The Nest Cam Indoor is available in Snow, Hazel, and Berry, while the Outdoor Cam comes in Snow and Hazel and is IP56 rated, making it weatherproof and dust-resistant.
Google has also introduced more affordable options, partnering with Walmart to launch the onn Indoor Camera Wired and onn Video Doorbell Wired. These lower-priced devices offer 1080p live view resolution, with additional intelligent features from Gemini available through a paid subscription.
The Nest Aware subscription has been rebranded as Google Home Premium, with the same pricing tiers but now included in Google One subscriptions. The Google Home app has also been updated to integrate all Nest functionality, eliminating the need to toggle between apps.
With these advancements, Google’s new Nest devices and Gemini AI capabilities are set to redefine the smart home security landscape, offering users a more intuitive, secure, and connected experience.
