FromIIT Dream to Cybersecurity Journey: Resilience After Setbacks

My journey to computer science wasn’t straightforward. While I dreamed of IITs for Civil Engineering, parental concerns over my mental health, after a battle with depression, redirected my path to a private college for Cybersecurity. This pivot wasn’t easy. That lingering “what if” about IIT remains a tough feeling, a constant reminder of dreams reshaped by mental health struggles. But it taught me a powerful lesson: never let mental health control your trajectory.

The initial phase at SOA University felt like rebuilding fundamentals. I leaned heavily on resources like GFG, YouTube, and competitive platforms like CodeChef. My focus was clear: master core concepts before diving deep into specialized areas like cloud security or ethical hacking. This deliberate, foundational approach provided stability during a challenging transition.

Now, in my second year, I actively explore cybersecurity. Cloud computing, competitive programming, and ethical hacking form my current toolkit. The journey involves continuous learning and practical application. While the IIT milestone is missed, my college experience is rich with growth and technical development. The struggle with depression, though a setback, honed resilience I now channel into my studies and future career goals.

The biggest takeaway? Seeking help is crucial. My recovery through counseling wasn’t weakness; it was essential strength. My advice to future engineers: prioritize mental well-being. It’s not a detour; it’s the foundation for sustainable success in any demanding field. Your mind is your most valuable asset – protect it fiercely.
