From Coder to Designer: My Career Transformation
I discovered my true passion by embracing change—here’s how I made the leap.
As a student, I was fascinated by technology and coding, spending countless hours mastering programming languages and building websites. But something unexpected happened as I explored web design: I found myself drawn more to creating visual layouts than writing code.
I enrolled in a web design coding course, hoping to blend my technical skills with creative expression. What I discovered was that my heart lay in the visual elements—the color schemes, typography, and user interfaces that made websites come alive.
After completing the course, I decided to pivot toward graphic design. I enrolled in courses at a local community college and began building my portfolio through freelance projects and internships. My first break came at ADmyBRAND, where I worked as a UI/UX designer. There, I learned the fundamentals of user-centered design and how visual decisions impact user experience across websites, mobile apps, and branding campaigns.
A second internship at Rajat Agarwal & Creators challenged me further. I completely redesigned a modular kitchen shop’s website, learning to balance client needs with design principles while managing project timelines effectively.
Armed with experience, I launched my freelance career on Fiverr. This phase taught me invaluable lessons about marketing myself, communicating with clients, and managing multiple projects—all while working on designs I was genuinely passionate about.
Over time, I realized my true calling was graphic design rather than UI/UX. I invested in learning Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, taking on more graphic design projects to sharpen my skills.
Today, I work full-time as a graphic designer at a design agency, creating visual designs for clients across websites, mobile apps, and branding campaigns. The journey from coding student to professional designer wasn’t linear—it required exploration, risk-taking, and persistence.
My story proves that it’s never too late to change direction. Whether you’re considering a career shift or exploring a new field, take that first step. Every course, internship, or freelance project moves you closer to your goal. Be patient, stay persistent, and remain open to opportunities. With dedication, you can transform your career and achieve your dreams.
