The Unexpected Shift: How Coaching Redefined My Path to IIT

A seemingly mandated coaching experience unexpectedly ignited a passion for learning and shaped my future, revealing a crucial gap between school preparation and the demands of competitive exams.

My tenth-grade board exams concluded with a bittersweet feeling – the promise of a carefree summer vanished with my parents’ decisive announcement: Aakash Institute, and IIT coaching, starting in April. At the time, IITs were simply “big deals,” and my academic success hadn’t extended beyond a general aptitude for studying. My parents, recognizing a need for focused preparation, steered me toward this intensive program.

The transition from the familiar aquarium of school to the vast, competitive ocean of Aakash was jarring. India’s education system, I quickly realized, lacked the rigor and depth found within the coaching institute. The teachers possessed a genuine expertise, and the syllabus demanded a level of engagement I hadn’t experienced before. I encountered a new cohort – intensely driven, intellectually stimulating students, forging friendships amidst the pressure.

Despite my initial reluctance and a tendency to avoid excessive practice, I consistently ranked among the top students, largely thanks to my mother’s persistent encouragement. Chemistry, unfortunately, became a particular point of contention, influenced by a challenging instructor. However, physics and mathematics proved surprisingly engaging. The COVID-19 pandemic initially disrupted our online sessions, but the eventual return to in-person classes brought a renewed sense of camaraderie and unforgettable memories with teachers and peers.

Crucially, the teachers at Aakash weren’t just imparting knowledge; they were offering life lessons – strategies for building a relationship with subjects, guidance on navigating challenges, and insights into building a stable future. They bridged the significant gap between school’s curriculum and the rigorous demands of the JEE exam, a gap that continues to widen.

It’s important to dispel the common misconception that coaching is inherently detrimental. My experience was profoundly positive. I learned, I thrived, and I worked diligently. Yet, I’m eternally grateful for the invaluable life lessons imparted by my teachers – lessons that have undeniably shaped my journey and contributed significantly to where I stand today. The impact of that coaching experience extends far beyond exam scores; it’s a testament to the power of dedicated educators and a reminder that sometimes, the most unexpected paths lead to the greatest rewards.
