Rewriting Your Story: Overcoming Anxiety and Finding Joy

Tessa Zimmerman’s journey proves that even with a challenging diagnosis, a fulfilling life is possible—and within reach.

Told as a teenager she’d never lead a normal life due to severe anxiety, Zimmerman defied expectations, graduating with honors, founding a nonprofit, and now sharing her inspiring story in her book, I Am Tessa. Her experience highlights a crucial distinction: the power to choose how we respond to anxiety, rather than simply reacting to it.

Zimmerman identifies the “fight-or-flight” response as a common trap, triggered by even minor stressors. Learning to respond—to pause, breathe, and act from a place of calm—is key to unlocking joy. She shares five practical tools she uses daily to shift from reaction to response:

  • Gratitude Letters: Daily reflections on what you’re thankful for, looking forward to, and needing help with rewire your brain to focus on the positive.
  • Breathing Reminders: Scheduled breaks to connect with your breath and body, providing opportunities to respond instead of react.
  • Build Your Tribe: Surround yourself with supportive people who offer different kinds of encouragement and perspective.
  • Personal Mantras: Positive affirmations like “I am supported” or “I am capable” provide daily boosts.
  • Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to how different foods and activities affect you, responding to your body’s needs rather than mental cravings.

Zimmerman emphasizes that lasting change comes from small, consistent actions. These tools, she believes, create ripples of positivity, leading to a life filled with unbounded joy. It’s not about eliminating anxiety entirely, but about developing the skills to navigate it and choose a path toward well-being.

What small step will you take today to shift from reacting to responding and unlock more joy in your life?
