Google Summer of Code

Cracking the Google Summer of Code requires perseverance, dedication, and a willingness to learn from failure, as evident from the author’s journey from a complete newbie to a successful participant.
The Google Summer of Code, often abbreviated to GSoC, is an international annual program in which Google awards stipends to students who complete a free and open-source software coding project during the summer. The program is open to university students aged 18 or over, providing them with a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in coding and open-source software development.
The author’s first attempt at GSoC was during their freshmen year of college, where they sent a proposal to work on an extension to import assets from Blender to Godot, an open-source gaming engine. Although they failed, they learned valuable skills such as Blender, GDScript, and basic Git/Github, which laid the foundation for their future attempts.
The author’s second attempt was more successful, as they started searching for organizations in December and shortlisted a few, including Coala, which was recommended by a senior as a good starting point for beginners. However, they soon realized that Coala was filled with many contributors, and their chances of succeeding were slim.
Undeterred, the author continued their search and eventually found EOS, a sub-organization of the Python Software Foundation, which was participating in GSoC for the first time. With fewer contributors and a project that involved designing on Adobe XD, a tool the author was familiar with, they decided to focus their efforts on EOS.
After weeks of contribution and dedication, the author submitted a proposal and had an interview, ultimately getting selected for the Google Summer of Code program.
The author’s journey is a testament to the importance of perseverance and learning from failure. By sharing their experiences, they hope to inspire and motivate others to participate in the Google Summer of Code program, which can be a life-changing opportunity for students to gain valuable skills and experience in the field of open-source software development.
In conclusion, the Google Summer of Code is a prestigious program that provides students with a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in coding and open-source software development. With dedication, perseverance, and a willingness to learn from failure, students can successfully participate in the program and gain valuable skills that can benefit their future careers.
