Debunking the Bullshit Case

Silence vs Bullshit: Which Truly Guides Us to Truth?

Frankfurt says bullshit ignores the truth, but new philosophies suggest even flawed speech might light the path to discovery.

In his seminal essay “On Bullshit,” philosopher Harry Frankfurt makes a chilling assertion: the bullshitter is not a liar, but someone entirely indifferent to the truth. Unlike a liar who respects the truth enough to hide it, the bullshitter disregards it altogether. Consequently, Frankfurt argues that silence is infinitely preferable to the aimless noise of bullshit; to speak without caring for accuracy is a moral and intellectual failure.

However, contemporary philosopher Stefano Zorzi offers a compelling counter-narrative that challenges this traditional view. Zorzi suggests that Frankfurt’s dismissal of bullshit is too absolute. He posits that the very act of engaging in bullshit—of trying to sound knowledgeable even when one is not—can actually serve as a functional mechanism for navigating reality. In this framework, bullshit isn’t the enemy of truth, but rather a heuristic tool. It allows us to grapple with complex ideas imperfectly, creating a necessary dialogue that eventually, through trial and error, leads us closer to accuracy.

This debate strikes at the heart of how we communicate in the digital age. We are bombarded by information that feels like bullshit—hot takes, unverified claims, and confident speculation. Frankfurt’s view would have us remain silent until we are certain, a stance that risks paralysis and isolation. Zorzi’s perspective, conversely, invites us to engage with the noise, to treat public discourse not as a minefield of falsehoods but as a messy, collective brainstorming session.

Ultimately, reaching the truth is rarely a solitary pursuit. While silence preserves personal integrity, it does nothing to advance collective understanding. Perhaps the most honest approach lies somewhere in the middle: speaking with intention, but accepting that the path to truth is paved with imperfect conversations. By engaging critically—even with the bullshit—we ensure the silence doesn’t win.
